A lens test at the Botanical Gardens

Took a trip over to the Botanical Gardens today.  Even though the weather was a bit overcast and rain threatened the gardens were still beautiful.

The reason for my trip was twofold – to test out my new Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens and to scout out locations.  The need for locations is because I have been booked for a pre-wedding shoot there in 3 weeks so I wanted to find some suitable spots for photographs.

I also wanted to try out my lens at 200mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture to see how it performed taking photos of people.  I spotted this happy couple and snapped a candid of them.  I like how it looks like they were posing for me but as hey didn’t see me taking their photo they didn’t.  Anyway, it shows that I can safely use the lens at 200mm and f/2.8 and still keep the subjects in sharp focus.

I soon got distracted from my people watching however by the lovely flowers at the gardens.

And then I noticed something scurrying near my feet – a squirrel!  And he didn’t seem too bothered by me and got up on his hind legs almost as if he was posing for me.  So I snapped this quick shot:

You lookin' at me?

He then decided that I perhaps was interested in nicking his nut and sped off up a tree to hide from me!

So I have to say that I am loving my new lens and the creative options it gives me at 200mm and f/2.8.  I am really looking forward to using it for the pre-wedding shoot next month!
