The most amazing consumer electronics shop in the world....almost

Canon cameras and lenses, originally uploaded by electrolyte2006.

Sorry in advance. This is a post that will only be appreciated by photo-nerds, fans of consumer electronics and fans of toilets. Yes, really, toilets. So if you're not so interested in any of that skip to the end where you'll see a nice photo of my lunch....

Went yesterday to almost the most amazing consumer electronics shop in the world. I'll come to the reason why it was almost later but the store was called BIC Camera in Akihabara (in Tokyo for those who aren't keeping up with where I am at the moment).

It makes the likes of Curry's, Dixons and Comet back home seem like Peckham Market.. The shop is spread over 9 floors, with each floor being the same size as a typical Curry's store in the UK. As an example of how massive it was they had one floor that was solely dedicated to cables, accessories and media (DVD, BR, CDR etc).

They had a whole floor dedicated to cameras and photography and it was amazing. They had every kind of DSLR available on the market today and pretty much every lens too from Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Tokin, Tamron etc. And most of the lenses - apart from the expensive L series lenses - were available for you to put onto to your camera to try them out. So I played with a Canon 35 f/2, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 24-70L 2.8, 24-105 f4 IS, Sigma 10-20 and a whole heap of others that I can't remember now. In short it was a dream for a DSLR nerd such as myself.

Well, it was nearly a dream come true. And this is the reason why it was almost the best shop in the world. Because the Yen is so much stronger than the pound at the moment the prices of the kit were so much more expensive than in the UK. So even though I fell in love with the 35mm f/2 lens I didn't buy one.

Here are some photos what I took using I think a 24-105L:

As well as cameras the shop also sold TVs, BR players, hi-fi, home cinema, kitchen gadgets, computer games, computers, camcorders, musical instruments, DJ equipment and much more besides. And toilets. You might think that it is strange that a consumer electronics shop sells toilets. But these aren't any old toilets, these are electronic toilets. They have controls that heat the seat, provide jets to clean both "front" and "back" and all kinds of other things. I have one in my hotel room bathroom in fact. So I guess you are nobody in
Japan unless you have an electric toilet.

Toilets!

There is a recession on but you wouldn't have guessed it from this shop. As an example they were selling a 103" TV. Yes, 103 inches. It cost a mere £50K. Unsurprisingly I didn't buy one.

So, for those of you who skipped on ahead at the start, here is the promised photo of my lunch from yesterday:

Lunch, Day 2

It was really a rather delicious duck ramen soup. It was very tasty even though the sauce was very fishy.
